Award Ceremony

The Award Ceremony on Saturday night was great fun. Peter Sagal from the NPR show Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me kept light a night that touched on some pretty heavy themes (from death to abortion and on – see this years award winning documentaries).
One highlight for me was Lu Olkowski’s (Best Documentary: Bronze Award for “Grandpa”) subject, Jeremiah Zagar, relaying to the crowd how much the award had meant to her at a rough time. That was a great moment. I think of how much work Julie Shaprio and Johanna Zorn (along with Roman Mars and Delaney Hall) put into this conference and the ongoing Third Coast Festival. It must be really gratifying for them to realize that they are truly changing lives. I know that sounds corny. But I don’t think that is an exaggeration. Third Coast provides a community and a support network for a field that, it seems to me, can be kind of solitary and enervating at times.
Receiving the Sliver Award for Best Documentary (“A Fragile Son”), Surjit Sachdev reflected on his very personal journey toward accepting his son’s mental disability. At one point, Sachdev made a statement relaying how much his son meant to him. In a bit of timing that even Peter Sagal gave props to, Sachdev’s son stage whispered “Yes!” from the audience. A beautiful moment, the likes of which Third Coast seems to be adept at delivering.
Anyone else have a favorite moment?
