Report after the first evening at the 2007 Third Coast International Audio Festival Conference:
When I arrived at the hotel, I was handed a small box with personal note from TCF. Inside was a TCF Red Velvet cupcake which I am munching on now. Thanks TCF! Nice touch. However, I'll have you know I cannot be bribed.
Registration had conference goers picking up name tags, information, a complimentary TCF poster and button, and various info. At the opening reception I was at a table with all independent producers. One from Ireland and one from California who had the good fortune to get his very first radio pitch accepted. He offered some insight into the process and some hope for some of us pitch rookies.
After the reception was a great presentation from Association of Independents in Radio (AIR) and Jesse Thorn. It included some fantastic pieces from podcasters who are not beholden to station managers nor (luckily in the case of these pieces) the FCC. Really funny, edgy stuff that too many people missed out on (likely because it went past 10:30 and came after open bar).
Tomorrow is a full day that starts with the official opening session – The 2007 ShortDocs - Dollar Stories. I am participating in this one as a presenter. Later in the day I’ll play patient to Dr. Ira Glass (This American Life) for an Audio Doctor session in which a “limited number of conference attendees will have the opportunity to bring their work (completed or in progress) and receive a 20 minute, private counseling session with accomplished producers and editors.” A really outstanding opportunity but, had I known I would be showing work to Ira Glass 6 months ago, I can assure I would have prepared something more than what I have. Such is life.
Lots of great sessions tomorrow – can’t decide. Need to rest up.
