Third Coast 2007

Welcome to the official Transom blog for the 2007 Third Coast International Audio Festival Conference. Please check back here in the days before the conference for a look at this year's events. Once the conference starts, I'll be posting pictures, keeping you abreast of conference happenings and have interviews with some of the players. But don't let me hog the blog (or make me do all the work). Whether you are following from home or at the conference itself, please don't be shy about adding your comments to the conversation or asking me questions about the Third Coast experience or anything else.

By way of introduction my name is David Maxon. Though I've been a long time fan, I am pretty much brand new to the world of radio. But in the last few months I have had the privilege of being able to get involved with Third Coast and Transom. Just a few months back I sent an e-mail to Transom inquiring how one starts a career in radio. One of the suggestions that Transom's Samantha Broun gave was to attend Third Coast. So, I entered a piece in the Short Doc competition and, amazingly, it was accepted. I was going to Third Coast. In a way I guess I could be sort of a poster child for the mission of entities like Transom and Third Coast – to channel new voices to radio.

If you are reading this from a curious newcomer's perspective as well, great! I hope to give you the opportunity to learn how attending Third Coast could benefit your quest to get involved in radio. Please don't be shy about posting your comments.

If you are a Third Coast vet who couldn't make it this year, maybe I can offer you a vicarious experience through fresh eyes. Please post your comments as well.

Either way, this should be fun. Keep checking back for lots of conference chatter.

Comments on This Entry:

Hi David,

This Year's Short Docs were great!

Love your stream of consciousness entry. Very poetic. Very Third Coast.

I like Mia Lobel's Burger Bell entry in a similar way.

I won't be at Third Coast, but I know some people who'll be going.

Good luck with the blog. I'm sure you'll have a lot to talk about.

David,
thanks for taking this on! I like to look back at the Blog after I get home from Third Coast -- to see what it was I had been doing all weekend -- and what I missed!
See you there.

It's great that Transom's blogging 3rd Coast again - and welcome aboard David! Looking forward to hanging out at the festivities and checking out your shortdoc (let's get it up and out on PRX!).

I attended the educators round table session last year and was inspired by the different projects that people were doing in their classes. I am looking forward to attending the entire conference this year to hear some exciting pieces. If anyone is sticking around past Sunday and interested in another dimension of sound, one of my classes is hosting a panel discussion about underground rap production and making beats. The event is free and open to the public. Here are the details:

Monday, November 5, 2007 (1:30-3:00 PM):

Panik, Molemen;
Mr. Echoes, The Opus;
K-Kruz, EV Productions.

The session is at DePaul University,
Schmitt Academic Center (Room 161),
2322 N. Kenmore,
Chicago.

Take care,
Daniel

Dear Dave,

Congratulations on your radio piece. Makes me want a cat. Personally, I've always wanted to be on radio but don't have the looks.

Yesterday, I saw a list of all Third Coast attendees, but now I can't find it. I thought it was on the Third Coast page. Anyone know the link?

Found it. Third Coast understandably requests it be used "respectfully":

Just saying hi to all my radio colleagues, and hoping you're having a great time in Chicago! Thinking of you from South Africa, and dancing along from this Cape Town coast...

Simple question, so simple. Think back to your first moment that you held a recorder in your hand. That is where I am and I don't know what recorder to begin with.....

I need basic information
How do you record, on what, with what and how do you wire yourself up? I want to be mobile.
